I had owned the 2015 macbook 12-inch and also 2016 one but I sold away them in the end and finally settled down with 2017 MacBook Pro TB which I am certainly happy about this switch. It is light for sure but hardware wise it is also lacking even the screen size. The biggest bummer of MacBook 12-inch is actually the pricing, it is very expensive if compare to much capable machine such as MacBook Pro 13-inch with no touchbar model. I am sure your conparison is to previous few years back model of MacBook Pro or air. It is impossible for the curren macbook 12-inch to outperform the current MacBook Pro 13-inch. But at the same time newer gen MacBook Pro chip is also getting more powerful especially the current one on MacBook Pro 13-inch 2018 that has min 4 cores. Over the year MacBook 12-inch has increased in processing power due to newer gen chip this is true. Macbook 12-inch is using Low-powered processor therefore fanless design but the problem of it is that it cannot sustain the turbo boost for heavy task due to the heat. MacBook Air can certainly do all productivity tasks or even photo or video editing. The only complaint is on the screen which is not retina. MacBook Air all the while have same class of laptop processor as MacBook Pro so performance I dun think anyone will complain for MacBook Air even in the past. It is actually not the same comparison for MacBook 12-inch vs MacBook Air. MOST importantly the weight it not far away from macbook 13-inch. Not to forget that MacBook Pro 13-inch has more powerful processor, better screen, touch bar, more USB-c ports. The starting price of it for 256gb storage option is not far from MacBook Pro 13-inch. The MacBook Air is in a weird position now giving its price. If giving a choice, I may choose 8gb ram instead and save the money for next upgrade.īut if the processor is min 4 cores like MacBook Pro 2018, it will help if there is 16gb ram. In fact, 16gb is even overkilled for my 13-inch MBP TB.

Macbook 12-inch is very portable to carry around, this is no doubt, but processing power wise is still disappointing. After one year of use, the 12-inch macbook to me the scene is too small. The MacBook Pro 13-inch is in fact lighter and slimmer than 2015 model.
I dun mind to trade a bit more weight for better power and bigger screen of MacBook Pro 13-inch. I used the macbook 12-inch 2016 model for a year then I switched to MacBook Pro TB 16GB ram model.
